Here’s a very simple and original idea to delight the people you love: a ready-made kit for making cookies! Whether it’s for Christmas, a birthday or to thank your child’s teacher at the end of the year, this kit is incredibly easy to put together and can be customised to the tastes and wishes of the person receiving it 🙂 I’d already seen these SOS cookies online and thought the idea was brilliant, but I’d never given it a go! I got started for Christmas and gave away several kits: to my sister, my sisters-in-law, friends… varying the contents each time. I think it’s really lovely to make, don’t you?

I didn’t use my usual cookie recipe; instead I went for the recipe you see everywhere in SOS cookie kits, i.e. one based on rolled oats. Then all you need is a 1-litre jar. You’ll find them at the Swedish store, but I found cheaper ones in a little shop near my home, €1.35 for a 950 ml jar. Perfect!

The 1L Jar

Ingredients
  • 250 g (8.8 oz) flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • a pinch of vanilla powder (tip of a knife)
  • 100 g (3.5 oz) light brown sugar
  • 100 g (3.5 oz) caster sugar
  • 100 g (3.5 oz) rolled oats
  • 100 g (3.5 oz) nuts (pecans, hazelnuts, almonds, pink pralines, M&Ms…)
  • 150 g (5.3 oz) chocolate (dark, milk, white or a mix)
Notes

You can of course change the kit’s contents to your liking — add some dried cranberries or other treats 🙂

What You Need to Do (to fill the jar)

Ingredients
  • None
Preparation
1

Wash the jar with hot soapy water and dry it thoroughly.

2

Mix together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt and vanilla powder. Pour into the empty jar and pack it down firmly. Tap the jar on the counter to get a level surface.

3

Add the caster sugar, pack it down, then add the light brown sugar. Pack down again.

4

Add the rolled oats, tapping again, then the chocolate chips or chunks.

5

Finish with the roughly chopped nuts (if you toast them first, let them cool completely before adding) and seal the jar tightly.

The Labels

Next, you’ll need to make the labels. I made a round “SOS cookies” label for the top of the jar, another “SOS cookies” label for the front, and glued the instructions on the back. You can find lots of pretty ready-made labels online, or make your own. I personally love the comic-strip-style instructions by Gally and Ob from the blog Papilles et Pupilles. For the front label I visited Flashgourmand, and for the top label I adapted a template I found online.

Instructions to attach to the jar:

3

Empty the contents of the jar into a bowl. Add 125 g (4.4 oz) of softened butter and 1 large beaten egg. Mix together, shape into balls, press them flat on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 13 to 15 minutes at 180°C / 350°F.

4

All that’s left is to decorate the jar: a bit of raffia or curling ribbon, a pretty bow, some tissue paper and you’re done 🙂

The cookies keep well for a few days in a sealed tin.
